From roughly October through April, when the forests of Mendocino County are damp and cool, fungi thrive. Though most of the 3000 species found in the county are inedible, a dozen or so can be collected, cooked and eaten. Unless you’re an expert mycologist, the best way to find and identify them is to take a guided tour. We’ve rounded up a few of the best foraging tours below, all of which feature a mushroom expert who will show you where to go, and what to gather.
Details are accurate as of January 2025, but be sure to call to verify, as dates, times and prices can change.

In addition to featuring a variety of guest speakers, they can help identify your fungi and let you know if it’s safe to eat or not. Meetings take place from September to May on the second Tuesday of the month from 5:30-7:30 pm. You can attend in person at the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Bragg, or via Zoom.

If you plan to forage on your own in Mendocino County, please be aware that it is not allowed on private property without the permission of the property owner. Foraging is also not allowed in state parks. You can forage in Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF), but you must get a permit in advance, by mail. Permit information for JDSF can be found here.
